Henningsvær, Norway _ Bryggmannsholmen: Fishing Industry Transformed Into A Hotel And Wellness _ Reiulf Ramstad Arkitekter

Transformation of a former fishing industry on an islet in a hotel with activities and wellness facilities.

Fishing is historically one of the three most important industries in Norway together with agriculture and industry. Lofoten cod has been important for the development of the nation, the stockfish produced in Henningsvær is a sought-after commodity internationally and is thus linked to the country's economic development, the improvement of the coast's infrastructure and in the construction of communities. No town planners have made plans for Henningsvær, and the fishing village has grown based on function and use. The inhabitants of Henningsvær are to be thanked for the fact that the place has preserved its distinctive character as a fishing village with visible historical traces. Today, Henningsvær is to functions as a fishing industry but it has also become a popular tourist destination. Several considerations must be taken into account for the future development of the village.

The climate in Henningsvær has influenced the local building tradition. The buildings in the fishing village have been made robust to wind and weather, which gives it a sober expression. The buildings traditionally have great variation in color and material use. Its shape and appearance are often closely linked to its use, as we can see from industrial buildings from the same period. A building often has several extensions and visible traces of alterations. This provides a varied development, which includes features from several different styles and influences. Material scarcity, and the need to make changes and improvements quickly, have provided further variation and innovation through creative solutions.

The project of Bryggmannsholmen, located on an islet on the east side of the village, has been used by generations of fishermen, Frederiksen’s sons. The site has been developed over the years with a variety of constructions of sizes and materials, to respond to the industry needs, and has been then left abandoned for decades when the fishing activity stopped.

Based on the local tradition and building on the region’s culinary, wellness and nature opportunities, the Bryggmannsholmen project has the ambition to propose a holistic and true ecotourism experience. While caring for and rehabilitating the existing buildings, some new constructions will be built according to historical traces of the fishing industry, recreating a vernacular architecture and reusing local materials. The new hotel and wellness resort will offer a qualitative and luxurious experience, in connection to nature and its context.
